Gulf Air is the principal national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain Gulf Air operates scheduled services to over 48 destination spanning Asia, Africa, the Middle and Far East. Its main base is Bahrain International Airport.

The Airline was established in 1950, offering the largest network in the Middle East with over 40 destinations worldwide. It is owned by the Kingdom of Bahrain through Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (in Feb 2010 it announced it will divest/return back its ownership to the state).

In 1950, it was registered as Gulf Aviation as a private shareholding company, In October 1951, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) became a major shareholder in Gulf Aviation, holding a 22% stake. In 1973 the governments of the Kingdom of Bahrain, State of Qatar, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the Sultanate of Oman purchased BOAC's shares in Gulf Aviation. The "Foundation Treaty" signed on 1 January 1974 gave each government a 25% shareholding in the rebranded Gulf Air, which became the flag carrier for the four states. 

On the 13 September 2005 a decision by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to withdraw from Gulf Air. On 6 May 2007, the government of Bahrain claimed full ownership of the airline as joint-owner Oman also withdrew from the airline and such Gulf Air became fully owned by Bahrain.

Sana’a, Yemen Gulf Air, announced it will increase its flights frequency to Sana’a from three  to four times a week, effective 6th June 2012,  responding to growing passenger traffic. Gulf Air launched direct flights between Bahrain and Sana’a on October 2011, earlier served by a round flight via Yemen second city, Aden.
