Los Angeles, Singapore Airlines has released the operating results for May 2012, marking a wide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) recorded a year-on-year improvement of 7.1%, which outpaced the growth in capacity (measured in available seat kilometres) of 3.9%. As a result, passenger load factor (PLF) improved 2.2 percentage points to 75.8%.
The number of passengers carried increased by 6.6% to 1.5 million. PLF strengthened across all regions, except for West Asia and Africa, as growth in passenger carriage outstripped growth in capacity. Europe and South West Pacific regions registered strong year-on-year improvements in PLF as loads were affected by the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last year. Promotional activities also contributed to the improvement in loads.
SilkAir’s system wide passenger carriage increased 22.7% year-on-year against 25.6% growth in capacity. Consequently, PLF was 1.7 percentage points lower at 73.2%. Growth in traffic lagged that of capacity increases for both regions. SilkAir has increased frequencies to several existing destinations and launched scheduled services to six new destinations in the past year.
Overall cargo traffic (measured in freight ton kilometres) was 7.4% lower than the same month last year, while cargo capacity decreased by 4.6%. As a result, cargo load factor (CLF) in May 2012 fell by 1.9 percentage points. CLF decreased for all regions, except for South West Pacific and West Asia and Africa.
