Emirates is one of the world’s most prominent and luxurious airlines, serving as a global flag carrier for the United Arab Emirates. Based in Dubai, it has grown from a small regional operator in 1985 to the world’s largest long-haul airline.
Below is a brief overview of its current operations, fleet, and what it is known for as of 2026.
1. Operations and Network
Hub: Dubai International Airport (DXB), specifically Terminal 3, which is dedicated to Emirates flights.
Destinations: It flies to over 150 destinations across six continents. Its “hub-and-spoke” model makes Dubai a central connecting point for travel between the West (Europe/Americas) and the East (Asia/Australia).
Ownership: Wholly owned by the Government of Dubai through the Investment Corporation of Dubai.
2. The Fleet (All Wide-Body)
Emirates is unique because it only operates “wide-body” (twin-aisle) aircraft, meaning even their shortest flights are on large planes.
Airbus A380: Emirates is the world’s largest operator of this “Superjumbo” double-decker plane (over 110 in service). It is famous for featuring onboard showers for First Class and a lounge/bar for Business and First Class.
Boeing 777: The backbone of their fleet, used for long-haul and high-capacity routes.
Airbus A350: As of 2024–2026, Emirates has begun integrating the A350 into its fleet to serve medium-to-long-haul routes with better fuel efficiency.
3. Key Features & Reputation
Award-Winning Entertainment: Their inflight system, ICE (Information, Communication, Entertainment), has consistently won “Best Inflight Entertainment” awards for decades, offering over 6,500 channels.
Premium Classes: They are a trendsetter in luxury travel.
First Class: Features fully enclosed private suites and “Game Changer” suites on certain Boeings.
Premium Economy: A newer addition being rolled out across the fleet, offering more space than Economy without the Business Class price tag.
Starlink Integration: Starting in 2026, Emirates is rolling out high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet to provide faster, free connectivity for passengers.
4. Recent Developments (2026)
Fleet Retrofit: The airline is currently in the middle of a multi-billion dollar program to refresh the interiors of its older A380 and 777 aircraft to ensure a consistent, modern experience across all flights.
New Routes: They have recently expanded or announced new services to cities like Helsinki, and increased frequencies to major hubs like London, Cairo, and Nairobi.
