Corporate Profile: Gulf Air

Founded in 1950, Gulf Air is one of the Middle East’s most historic airlines. Originally established as a joint-venture regional carrier, it has served as the sole national flag carrier of Bahrain since 2007. In 2026, the airline is operating under its “Calibrated Expansion” strategy, which prioritizes premium service and strategic “boutique” connectivity over mass-scale competition, successfully positioning Bahrain International Airport (BAH) as a sophisticated gateway between East and West.

2026 Strategic Milestones & Leadership
  • New Leadership: In November 2025, Martin Gauss (formerly of airBaltic) assumed the role of Group CEO, succeeding Dr. Jeffrey Goh. Gauss is currently leading a 2026 initiative to further modernize the fleet and enhance the airline’s digital infrastructure.
  • APEX 5-Star Status: In late 2025, Gulf Air was officially recognized as a 2026 APEX Five Star Major Airline for the third consecutive year, a prestigious award based entirely on passenger feedback regarding its cabin service and Bahraini hospitality.
  • The U.S. Return: Following a 28-year hiatus, Gulf Air successfully resumed direct flights to New York (JFK) in October 2025. By June 2026, the airline is scheduled to move its New York operations to the New Terminal One at JFK, significantly upgrading the ground experience for its North American passengers.
Fleet Modernization (2026 Status)

Gulf Air is in the process of a major wide-body expansion to support its growing long-haul network:

  1. Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner: This is the flagship of the fleet. Following a firm order for 15 additional Dreamliners finalized at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, the airline’s total commitment for the type has reached 17 aircraft. These jets are configured with the award-winning “Falcon Gold” lie-flat suites.
  2. Airbus A321neo LR: The workhorse for “long-thin” routes to Europe and Asia. In 2026, these aircraft are being used to relaunch seasonal leisure routes to Geneva, Nice, and Málaga, providing the range of a wide-body with the efficiency of a narrow-body.
  3. Sustainability: As part of its 2026 goals, Gulf Air is a lead pilot for IATA’s Integrated Sustainability Program (ISP), focusing on reducing carbon emissions through modernized flight planning and the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on select routes.
Network and Hub Strategy
  • The “Boutique” Network: Rather than flying everywhere, Gulf Air focuses on high-yield, strategic destinations. Its 2026 summer schedule includes 50+ destinations, with a heavy emphasis on Mediterranean hotspots and major European capitals.
  • Bahrain International Airport (BAH): The airline’s home is one of the most modern and efficient terminals in the world. In 2026, the airport remains a “hidden gem” for transit passengers, offering some of the shortest connection times in the Gulf region.
  • Formula 1 Partnership: The airline continues its long-standing role as the title sponsor of the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, using the event to showcase its premium “Falcon Gold” service to a global audience.
