Air Algerie

Corporate Profile: Air Algérie

Established in 1947, Air Algérie is one of Africa’s largest and most historic carriers. Headquartered in Algiers, the airline is currently executing a multi-billion dollar “2025–2030 Strategic Plan” aimed at transforming Houari Boumediene International Airport (ALG) into a major intercontinental hub connecting Africa with Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The 2026 “Holding Company” Restructuring

As of January 2026, Air Algérie has officially transitioned into a Holding Company model. This structural overhaul, led by CEO Hamza Benhamouda, is designed to improve operational efficiency and financial transparency:

  • Specialized Subsidiaries: The airline has spun off its departments into independent entities, including Air Algérie Ground Operation and the Aviation Academy, both of which commenced independent operations in January 2026.
  • Domestic Integration: The airline has fully integrated the international program of its subsidiary, Domestic Airlines (formerly Tassili Airlines), taking over routes to Nantes and Strasbourg to centralize its international brand.
  • Increased Funding: The Algerian government has significantly boosted support for the carrier, with 2026 subsidies reaching 20 billion dinars (~$154 million) to fuel its rapid expansion.
Fleet Modernization and 2026 Deliveries

Air Algérie is in the midst of a historic fleet renewal program. By January 2026, the fleet has grown to 56 aircraft, with more arriving:

  1. The Airbus A330neo Era: In January 2026, the airline took delivery of its third Airbus A330-900neo (named “Gara Djebilet”). These aircraft are the flagships of the long-haul fleet, featuring 300+ seats, Wi-Fi connectivity, and 25% lower fuel consumption.
  2. Narrow-Body Expansion: The airline is currently inducting Boeing 737 MAX-9 aircraft to modernize its high-frequency routes to Europe and the Middle East.
  3. Future Targets: The airline has 18 aircraft currently being delivered, with a long-term vision to expand the group fleet to 104 aircraft by 2030.
Global Network Expansion (2026 Milestones)

Air Algérie is aggressively opening new “Strategic Corridors” to capitalize on its geographic location:

  • Southeast Asia & China: On March 29, 2026, the airline is scheduled to launch its first-ever direct flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It has also recently strengthened its Guangzhou and Beijing services.
  • African Hub Strategy: The airline resumed regular flights to Johannesburg in January 2026. It has also utilized “Fifth Freedom” rights to launch intra-African routes, such as Douala–Abuja and Douala–N’Djamena.
  • European Growth: In addition to its dominant presence in France, the airline has stabilized its new route to Rotterdam (launched late 2025) and is preparing to launch service to Budapest and Birmingham later in 2026.
