RAK Airways was established in 2006 by Emiri Decree as the national airline of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. Launched with a vision to position the northernmost emirate on the global aviation map, the airline underwent several transformations—rebranding and shifting business models—before ultimately suspending all operations in early 2014.

• The First Wave (2007–2009): The airline commenced operations in late 2007 with a focus on connecting RAK to the Indian Subcontinent and the Levant. However, the 2008 global financial crisis hit the carrier hard, leading to a temporary suspension of scheduled services in 2009.
• The Relaunch (2010–2013): In October 2010, the airline returned with a new livery and a “value-for-money” hybrid model. This strategy aimed to bridge the gap between low-cost and full-service carriers, offering complimentary hot meals and generous baggage allowances.
• Domestic Innovation: In 2012, RAK Airways briefly made history by launching one of the UAE’s first domestic routes, linking Ras Al Khaimah (RKT) with Abu Dhabi (AUH) to provide easier connectivity for passengers in the Northern Emirates.

During its active years, the airline operated a mix of aircraft suited for regional and medium-haul missions:

1. Boeing 757-200: Utilized during its initial phase for longer routes, offering high capacity and range.
2. Airbus A320-200: Became the backbone of the airline during its relaunch phase. These aircraft were leased and configured to support the “value” model with a two-class or premium-economy feel.
3. Planned Expansion: At one point, the airline had ambitious plans to expand its fleet to 10 aircraft and serve 40 destinations by 2015, including a historic agreement for Boeing 737-800s that was never fully realized.

The 2014 Suspension and Legacy

On January 1, 2014, RAK Airways announced an indefinite suspension of all operations, citing increased operating costs and regional instability.

• Transition to Air Arabia: Following the closure, the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Civil Aviation signed a strategic partnership with Air Arabia, which established a hub at RAK International Airport to fill the void left by the national carrier.
• Impact: RAK Airways is remembered for its boutique approach to service and its efforts to promote Ras Al Khaimah as a unique tourist and business destination, independent of the major hubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
