Founded in 1998 as a joint venture between the national oil company Sonatrach and Air Algérie, the airline became wholly owned by Sonatrach in 2005.

In a major strategic shift finalized in mid-2025, the Algerian government oversaw the transfer of Tassili Airlines’ ownership back to Air Algérie, positioning it to become a specialized national domestic subsidiary.

• The “Domestic Flagship” Initiative: Under the 2026 restructuring plan directed by the Algerian Cabinet, Tassili is being optimized to handle the majority of Algeria’s domestic network. This allows its parent company, Air Algérie, to focus on aggressive international expansion.
• Energy Sector Lifeline: Despite its transition to more scheduled public flights, Tassili remains the primary transporter for the Algerian oil and gas sector. It provides essential “oil-bridge” flights, moving thousands of workers and equipment between northern cities and the Sahara’s production hubs.
• Tassili Travail Aérien (TTA): The airline’s specialized subsidiary continues to lead the market in aerial work, including pipeline surveillance, forest fire fighting, and medical evacuations (EVASAN).
