RAK Airways was incorporated by an Emiri Decree in 2006. The airline is a private joint stock company incorporated in the RAK Investment Authority Free Zone with an authorized capital of UAE Dirham 1.5 billion (US$ 400 million approx.) as the national airline of Ras Al Khaimah, one of the 7 emirates of the United Arab Emirates. It operate both charter and scheduled service and commenced operations early 2007 with two Boeing 757-200 aircraft. Recently Boeing and RAK Airways signed a UAE Dirham1.6 billion (US$ 435 million) contract for four 737-800s, with further purchase rights with the first aircraft available to be taken on delivery in 2011.RAK Airways main hub is Ras Al Khaimah Airport (OMRK) with scheduled and charter flights throughout the Middle East, Indian sub continent, Asia, and Europe
The carrier was hard hit during the financial crisis of 2007-2010, consequently flight operations were suspended in 2009. In 2010, the airline announced it resumed operations with a new corporate brand and marketing strategy.
