Wednesday, 06 March 2013
Director General
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), under Federal decree, announced regulation for Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) in the United Arab Emirates. Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) is a growing general aviation sector offering aviation enthusiasts access to flight.
LSA are light, non-complex aircraft that meet specific requirements and are authorized to operate along with an approved flying club membership.
Per geographical size, United Arab Emirates airspace is one of the busiest in the world, LSA implementation is subject of the security, commercial and general aviation interests and future release of airspace and cross country routing for general aviation is planned. Formerly unregulated, the GCAA vision was to increase safety, security and standardization for the growing aviation community.
The regulation will be published into a Notice of Proposed Amendment (NPA) that will remain open for 12 months allowing for comment. The NPA provides clear expectations for everyone to follow to ensure safety, security and standardization in UAE skies.
