Lufthansa Technik and Qatar Airways expand their cooperation
Monday, 16 November 2009

Qatar Airways and Lufthansa Technik are expanding their long-standing partnership even further. At the Dubai Airshow, the two companies announced the conclusion of a contract on cabin modifications for four Airbus A340-600 aircraft.

With the Doha International Airport Steering Committee (NDIA SC) a contract was signed governing the consulting for the construction of a maintenance hangar for Qatar Airways in Doha.

The contract for cabin modifications for four A340-600s covers changes in the mix of seat classes and modifications to the galleys and overhead bins. Work on the aircraft has already begun at the Lufthansa Technik facility in Frankfurt.
Each conversion is expected to take approximately 5,000 hours of work and should be completed as soon as January 2010. C-checks on the aircraft will be conducted simultaneously.

At Doha International Airport, which is itself still under construction, the NDIA SC is building one of the world’s largest aircraft hangars, to be used for technical services of Qatar Airways’ current fleet of 71 aircraft. Lufthansa Technik’s mandate is to provide support for the construction of the hangar from the design and concept phases to implementation. Under Lufthansa Technik’s eye, the hangar will be outfitted with maintenance docks and workshops and turned over to the customer ready for operation.
In the process, the customer will benefit from Lufthansa Technik’s experience with the construction of Airbus A380 hangars in Frankfurt and Beijing.

A team from Lufthansa Technik, the world’s largest aircraft MRO provider, will remain on-site to look after the construction of the hangar through its planned opening in 2011.

For five years now Lufthansa Technik has been looking after the V2500 engines in Qatar Airways’ A320 fleet as part of a ten-year Total Engine Support TES© contract.

In addition, the company was awarded a contract at the beginning of the year to repaint twelve Airbus A330 aircraft from the airline’s long-range fleet; the work will be completed by February 2010.
